Cultural
differences in Asia
Well,
there are many things that are different that never fails to surprise us.
The reverse is true for when they come to visit us. When Koreans, Japanese
and Taiwanese visit our countries, they are astounded at some of the
oddities that we have. Some of the everyday activities that they do are
actually better than what we do, and of course the reverse is true. Don't
try to change them. Just go with the flow:
"Don't
try to bend the spoon... just bend yourself." The little boy on the Matrix
"Don't
bring the mountain to Mohammad, bring Mohammad to the mountain."
Famous
wise words aside, there are many things that we need to adjust to. Don't let
it get you down, go for it with enthusiasm:
 |
Carry tissues, and
accept free tissues in the street, as many public toilets don't supply
toilet paper |
 |
Tissues are 'cleaner' than handkerchiefs.
Handkerchiefs are THE MOST disgusting thing you can use, especially when we make a
loud noise, then place it in our pocket. That is their opinion, not mine |
 |
When in Korean homes,
don't block their plumbing by flushing your toilet paper. Often, the pipes are too narrow for poo-poo and paper. Put
the paper in the bin and they will deal with it |
 |
If they offer you
gifts, politely decline for the first few offers, then gracefully accept,
but don't look overly eager in opening them... Best to open later (So you
don't look greedy). It is best to show how grateful you are for the
thought and consideration |
 |
Respect your elders,
which includes bowing (esp. in Korea and Japan) |
 |
When you're with the
locals, it's usually best to follow their lead, than embarrassing the hell
out of them by you wanting to do something that isn't cool in their
culture |
 |
Try new food with
enthusiasm |
 |
Cook the food that you
are used to at home. Having food that you are familiar with is very
important, especially in Korea, and when you're sick. Also see
Food. |
