It seems dumb to remind, but keep them informed on the public holidays situations, tell them about the cool things that you've done and seen, and send them photos, especially by snail-mail. This lets them know that you're doing fine, this makes them feel good that they are 'getting news from the East', and that you haven't entered into any illegal drug trade, or that you haven't been sold off into prostitution or slavery. Keep in contact at least weekly. If you do this, then they will usually be happy to do some errands for you.
