How and Where:
You can get
relatively cheap international phone calls from places
like 7-11's, or an 'everything-booth' (in South Korea these look like mini convenience
stores, and are usually near bus stops). Most phones will
accept international calling cards, and will say so in English. If all else
fails, you can ask your boss to use their phones, and pay them back later.
Internet
cafés are not common in Japan, but they are around. Usually they are
relatively cheap, but in Korea they everywhere, and can be really
smoke-filled. They are around in Taiwan, but not as common as 7-11's (which
is very common in East Asia). Perhaps, you can access the Internet, even for
a limited time or only for e-mail at your job. Ultimately, nothing beats
having your own computer and Internet access.

Internet phone calls can bemade.
This is you calling from your PC to a regular telephone. Perhaps the best is 'Skype'. You need to set up an account, a credit card to
put you in credit, and it can cost you as little as a few cents per half
hour. However, it seems Skype works best on Windows XP computers, and tends
to crash others after about fifteen minutes. Otherwise, ICQ can do it, too.
