Abstract:

This presentation will describe how teachers in Japan currently teach listening. It was found that when teachers could teach listening, it was often taught from either top-down or bottom-up approaches. Teachers often supplemented their listening lessons with other materials or activities outside of the course textbook. However, institutions often imposed extra requirements which often prevents listening instruction. This presentation will also briefly outline typical lesson structures used by teachers for teaching listening.
