Classroom Language in ELT

This is the medium of instruction and interaction in the classroom. There are three ways you can look at this. Using only English, using mostly your L1 (first language), and a mixture of both.

The Direct Method:

bullet

Is the method whereby the students are in effect banned from using a language other than the target language, ie: NO JAPANESE, NO CHINESE, NO PORTUGUESE etc... ONLY ENGLISH

bullet

Reason: Students can't use their native language if they ever travel to a place like Canada, Britain, or for that matter, Finland, Italy; nor in a business meeting with foreigners

bullet

They need to practice: explaining vocabulary that they don't know, to help get their meaning across, asking for help, explaining problems, and thinking in English

bullet

It also maximises the amount of use of the target language (English)

bullet

This is the opposite of the 'Indirect Method', where by the students learn about the target language, and don't actually use the target language

The Indirect Method:
bullet

Is the traditional way of teaching a language

bullet

You learn about English in your L1 (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, whatever)

bullet

Pro: Little to no anxiety experienced

bullet

Con: Many; too many. Students lack listening practice and phonetic experience; lack speaking practice and pronunciation experience; lack the chance to automaticise grammar for production; among others.

Middle Ground?
bullet

To me, it's in part, disrespectful and at times unhelpful for some students to deny their first language

bullet

In reality, in business meetings, they can use their L1 with colleagues, and then change to L2 as needed

bullet

Saves time, especially when they might be stuck on understanding a particular concept. Once it's understood, then they can progress with a clear and confident understanding of the concept, removing all doubt which could otherwise reduce the effectiveness of language acquisition

bullet

So far, it appears to me that an 90% English to 10% (or less) L1 classroom seems efficient and with much less anxiety.
