These are some small things you
can do as lesson fillers and as a transition between larger activities.
Jokes (Whole Class, 10mins)
-
Jokes are notoriously hard for
students for some reasons. 1. they need to be familiar with vocabulary and
alternative interpretations. 2. They need to know the cultural background.
3. They need to know the format or plot of the joke in order to recognise
the punch line. So, pre teach these, and then tell.
-
Example: A horse walks
into a bar, and the barman says, 'Why the long face?' Pre-teach 'bar',
'barman', and 'long face' (meaning, sad). Then remind them that horses and
bars are associated with cowboy days. Then remind them that the bit that
is funny is at the end of the joke.
