Presenting a Listening Task in ELT

As a student of first Korean, and then Japanese, I've experienced what it's like to just be thrown into a listening activity or task. Preparation is needed.

Step by step instructions

  1. Study or practice the grammar.

  2. Review the vocabulary as well.

  3. Moments before the listening, review the vocabulary, the grammar, and any other parts of language that the students might find difficult.

  4. Review pronunciation of vocabulary and sentence pronunciation of any interesting or unfamiliar parts

  5. Set up the context: best done by picture or by reading a (easy) short description

  6. Students read the questions they need to answer

  7. Listen (no writing)

  8. Listen again, pause the CD or tape at each part after the answer was presented

  9. Check answers. Any problem parts, you can read the tape script yourself, slowing the pronunciation down, so they can catch the answer. Or explain the difficult part of language.

  10. Then praise them on their efforts
