Student Talk Time in ELT

Quantity / Philosophy:

Students should ideally get maximum practice and language usage time. This could be 45% of the time. That is 10% teacher talk time, and 90% student time. That means 45% listening to partner time, and 45% them talking (or thinking about things involving English).

Follow-up Questions (FUQ):

bullet

It helps to develop, albeit, pseudo-conversations, and gets students getting interested in each other. It's more humanistic, and uses English as a means of communication, so it is no longer an object of study

bullet

Can start with a question on a paper, Student A: "Do you have a dog?" Student B: "Yes, I do" Then off the tops of their heads: Student A: "What colour is it? How old...? Where do you take it on weekends?... etc. Basically, asking more questions about the first answer.

bullet

I consider this to be extremely important, and the centre of my teaching approach
