In August 2004, a group of six friends, Mr. Bunlay Tong, Mr. Phin Vet, Mr. Tin Pan Gna, Mr. Som Pirom, Ms. Prin Sopanit, and Ms. Tida traveled to a poor community called Balang. It is located to the Northeast of Siem Reap city, in Bakong district.

Balang has a population about 5560 people of which about 45% are over 18 years of age. Each family has at least five young children. They support themselves by farming rice once a year. But these few years, there has not been enough, so rice production has been very low.

We met many children in the village. They told us that they want to go to school, but because of hardship and hunger, their parents can’t afford to send them. Instead, the children must work.

In early 2005, the Free English School Program (FESP) was founded for them all to attend. We provide essential services including a local English teacher and class-materials. By her great assistance, the principle in Balang allows us to use one of the classrooms in her primary school for teaching English.

Many parents agree this project assures their children’s future, especially since the region receives many tourists, and most jobs require English language ability. They have been trying to allow time their children to learn English. We believe that with our help, this generation might change the situation in their community for a brighter future.
